“It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.”
It can be easy to overlook or dismiss the little things in life; yet, as we are in the midst of the holidays, it seems more important than ever. Whether it's giving someone a smile or going the extra mile at work, you never really know how those little moments will affect the people around you.
Last week I had an interaction with a customer that may have seemed small to him, but to me, well, it made me feel really damn good. A fella was in the store on a busy day. We had a nice exchange; he found a few things; and I invited him back for a beer some day. The next day, he emailed me to say that we didn’t charge him for one of his shirts, and he wanted to arrange a time to call back to square up. It was in this moment that I realized how much that email meant. Not only was he going out of the way to do the right thing, but his simple act of kindness really touched me.
I talk to my kids about integrity, honesty, respect, and cleaning up their dirty underwear off the bathroom floor (seriously, how many times…?), but sometimes, I have to remind myself to pause and appreciate the little things - like my way too mature daughter chose to finish homework over going to a concert; because, we they are bound to grow up more quickly than I'd like. I told my kids about this fella, both because it was a lesson on integrity and also a lesson on how even the seemingly smallest of actions can make someone's day. And I told them to be like him. To do the right thing – sometimes a little thing – because that’s the world we want to live in.
Here’s to good people & good moments.
Happy holidays, yall!
